OMG, A DRAFT!?! Except No
The clickbait headlines have pissed me right off, so let me give you some info.
Many of you have seen the clickbaity headlines about the now mandatory Selective Service registration, effective December 2026.
Let me take a few minutes to clarify some things:
Most men between 18-25 are required to self-register with Selective Services within 30 days of their 18th birthday. This includes legal permanent residents, refugees, immigrants, and--you're going to love this--undocumented immigrants.1
Women remain ineligible, despite efforts to expand the Selective Service to include them, especially after they were allowed into combat roles, but those were always stripped from legislation.2 And honestly, I doubt that will change under Hegseth, given his hatred for women in the military.
This mandate will register all men automatically based on federal data provided by the states. And 46 states and territories already have automatic registration tied to driver's licenses and state IDs. And 46 states and territories already have automatic registration3.
Rep Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), sponsor of the amendment for the automatic registration, said it would allow for the funds dedicated currently to education and ads driving men to register to readiness and mobilization.4
This is part of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which was signed into law, and the SSS submitted a proposed rule on March 30th, but this is still under review by the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs and not finalized.
While there are big penalties for not registering, including exclusion from access to federal monies for higher education, federal employment and job training, and can carry a fine up to $250k and 5 yrs in jail, check w/your state for specifics.
BOTTOM LINE
THIS DOES NOT MEAN WE'RE LOOKING AT A DRAFT RIGHT NOW.
Even if Trump wanted to, Congress has to amend significant parts of the Military Selective Service Act first. That won't happen. Not just bc of the Dems, but more than a few Republicans won't vote for it either.
So, please, BREATHE.
